one of my DEC RF31 disk died today.
I was working on my vax 4000 and suddenly the disk stop spinning and the red light comes up.
I shutdown the system, power it off and on and the defunct disk beeps 4 times without spinning up.
In some cases the physical disk for RF disks and other disks used the same HDA assembly but a different interface board mounted on the disk, so I do not know what all your repair options are.
In general, the lifetime of all physical disks that work on VAXen are at EOL, and so are all the spares.
I would setup a SimH/VAX system LAVC boot node and cluster the physical VAXen with that.
Not quite as fast as native disks, but you have no shortage of new disks.
