Can anyone offer any help.
After a power outage the system doesn't want to boot.
When power up teh system runs selftest and passes, all LED's are out, running Test 100 finds no errors.
However the system halts with the following error
>>> b (start boot process)
response
?06 HLT Insti
PC=00000B15 PSL=041F0004
>>>
I've tried B/1 DKA300 and the same result applies.
Is there anyway testing DKA300 (boot disk) to ensure it OK from the console prompt?
Also it's been a while since I've played with a VAX system but am I correct in thinking that there is a standalone VMS command set that can be used to install OpenVMS or even restore a backup of the root disk (DKA300)
Any help would be greatly appreicated.

What does SHOW DEV show? Do all the devices show up?
You can install OpenVMS from booting the distribution CD/Hobbyist Kit, and you can use that to restore the system, if needed. If you have a tape drive, I would first boot a standalone-backup from CD, then try to back it up to tape or other disk first. Most of the disk might be okay, but some O/S file could have gotten corrupted in the power fail (rare, but can happen). |

The sho Dev command list all disk drives connected to the SCSI bus.
I'm currnetly using a PC, can I download the distribytion CD/Hooyist Kit and use it in the CD drive in the VAX?
Where can I obtain a standalone backup CD

Hi Steve,
Montagar offers the Hobbyist CD for $30:
http://www.montagar.com/hobbyist/mount.html
It is not clear to me though why there is no free download alternative if the software itself is free for Hobbyist purposes. On the other hand $30 is really not a fortune.
Assuming they want to make a little money, it would make much more sense for me if they offered printed documentation for sale. I personally prefer printed manuals very much over electronic PDF files.
Best wishes

I think the $30 just covers production and admin cost.
The cost of printing a small quantity of VMS manuals for VMS hobbyists would mean the cost of each copy would be too much. |

Another issue is copyrights. I do not have permission to offer software for download. I do have permission to make/sell CD kits (and it helps support the cause, too).
At one time, I did write and distribute a little installation manual, but by the time you factor in printing, extra shipping and handling, it was just much easier for me to put everything on the web, and you can print out what you need. |
