Ok guys, I figured I would upgrade my DS10 with a sound board.
Here's the story so far. I have OpenVMS 8.2 on this system, and have installed MMOV from
DEC-AXPVMS-MMOV-V0202--1.PCSI -- which I downloaded form HP's web site. The install seems to have gone fine, but I've tried it with two audiopci cards. One of which has an ES1371 chip on it, and the other one has a 1373.
MMOV$STARTUP.COM is being run from SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM, and does show up if I type SHOW SYS, however, when I try to run an audio program, I get something along these lines:
$ mcr mmov$audiocontrol
No wave devices to control.
$
Any ideas? Is there some patch I need to apply or some conflict between my version of VMS and my version of MMOV? Am I just missing The Last, Crucial Step of the installation process? I'm confused.

Hum, I don't kwow if MMOV can work with a card other than the Compaq Ensoniq AudioPCI
A look at SYS$SYTEM:SYSCONFIG.DAT on my work DS10 don't show any declaration for the audio card (only the old Microsoft card found on old alphas).
Edit: ah, you try audiopcis. Bizarre. Have you installed the last verson of MMOV ? There was another release after MMOV 2.2 if I remember well (probably for the VMS 8.x support).

The right vetrsion is MMOV 2.2-1 ; I supposeit's the one you installed.
Try to see if the card is recognized by the SRM console. (sh device or sh config in console mode)

Does anyone have an idea what kind of chip the Compaq card has, or might have? Because I haven't been able to find any Compaq-branded Ensoniq AudioPCI cards as of late. One I found is mentioned in the parts catalog of a certain company, but when I requested a quote I didn't get any reply.

The little info I was able to find says it has a Creative Ensoniq chip, either a 1371 or 1373. I also scrounged one of each from some old dead PCs but I have had no luck getting either to work in my DS10.
I don't have a Win9x/2K, PCI equipped PC to test them so I'm just assuming they are good. But they are old enough I suppose both could be dead and that is why VMS cannot find them. |

For the driver to be loaded the PCI ID needs to be in SYS$SYSTEM:SYS$USER_CONFIG.DAT.
The MMOV installation process puts the information there instead of modifying SYS$SYSTEM:SYS$CONFIG.DAT.
The newer Ensoniq sound cards may not be compatible with the MMOV driver and can not bring the device on line.
I can not remember the command to list the PCI bus IDs while VMS is booted.

Recently I installed a non-Ensoniq audio card (a Genius/KYE one, actually; I'll publish the full details soon) in a DS10. It seems to be supported, under VMS Alpha V8.4. I haven't been able to actually try it out, yet. I did
already install MMOV and I'll do so, as soon as I can!
This is how it's recognized in the SDA:
2000 EC ADA: 16 Philips Sound
FFFFFFFF.81CFFD10 88FFFFFFFF.85BF
I did run into this:
$ MCR SYSMAN IO AUTOCONFIGURE /LOG
[...]
%IOGEN-E-LOADERR, error configuring device ADA0, driver SYS$CMIDRIVER.EXE
-RMS-E-FNF, file not found
If and when this card will eventually work, it shouldn't be hard to find this card. It's all over auction sites (e.g. eBay) and at very good prices, too.

The driver (SYS$CMIDRIVER.EXE) seems to be available in VMS I64 installations, in the directory SYS$COMMON:[SYS$LDR].
Could it be that this particular audio card is that rare ‘terminal bell’ (16-bit ‘beeping’) ‘audio option’ for Integrity servers...? If so, then I guess there's no Alpha driver and I might as well take the card out again. The unfortunate thing is, this is a 5 V card, so it won't fit in an rx2620 PCI/PCI-X card cage.
I'll hunt for some Ensoniq cards instead and hopefully I'll get my hands on one that will work.

In the meantime, I successfully installed two Compaq-branded Ensoniq AudioPCI cards into my DS10s.
The version of MMOV on the HP web site wouldn't work, but someone was very kind to share a newer/newest version of MMOV (V2.2-1) with me, which does actually work! The version on HP's web site (V2.2, available here) would give me an error under VMS V8.4, after invoking SYSMAN IO AUTOCONFIGURE, that the Ensoniq driver image wasn't linked properly (or not against a recent enough version of VMS, apparently). MMOV V2.2-1 works fine, on the other hand.
DEC AXPVMS MMOV V2.2-1 Full LP Install (U) 17-JAN-2012
DEC AXPVMS MMOV V2.2 Full LP Remove - 17-JAN-2012
It's very interesting to have a VMS system with audio capabilities, I must say! (Especially after using I64 for quite some time.) I wish HP would release MMOV for I64 and support more devices. (Not just for audio, though.)
