Hi all
Besides my personalalpha emulated machine I just got a brand "new" alpha station ( 500 )
It was supposed to have openvms installed & working on, but it's not.
So I took the hobbyst cd to install the 8.3 version but the alpha complained, cos a newer firmware ( 6.4 is the one on board) is needed.
I Went to
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/archive/astn500.html
I tried the "Floppy Disk Update - OpenVMS" using my virtual machine but it seems not writing on the diskette.
So I choosed the "FAT-formatted" way.
As i rebooted the alpha machine (os_type NT ) I went to boot menu, install new firmware but all i got is an error on updating the rom
Unknown (0x28)
APU-E ROM DEVICE JUMPER ON ?
Unknown (0x28)
APU-E ROM DEVICE JUMPER ON ?
press RETURN to continue
I saw somewhere on google ( googoled too much, can't remember *where*) than I might have to "move" the jumper #18 to enable the writing on the rom.
I moved the jumper from position "110" to "011" , rebooted again the alpha and I got:
Unknown (0x00)
APU-E ROM DEVICE JUMPER ON ?
Unknown (0x00)
APU-E ROM DEVICE JUMPER ON ?
/ me lost
Any hints to help solving the issue would be VERY appreciated
thanks |

Thanks Stephen
Unfortunately I tried *everything* but I did not found a solution.
It really seems to be a HW problem
Anyway, I exchanged my alpha with a "new" one
Let's mark this post as "solved" , as now I can play again

that means that I CAN'T run any ssh server on my openvms 7.3?
main problem is that I can't ( better... i don't know how ) forward the X without ssh
using telnet from a linux pc I do
telnet openvms
Welcome to OpenVMS (TM) Alpha Operating System, Version V7.3
......
$set term/inquire
$ SET DIS/CRE/NODE="192.168.0.18" /TRANS=TCPIP
$ RUN SYS$SYSTEMECW$SESSION
but it works only on the (internal) lan
as I try to log in from "internet" i get:
X Toolkit Error: Can't open display:
Fatal error detected, image exiting -- final message:
no safety display could be opened
: no such file or directory
I tried to update the tcpip using the openvms 8.3 hobbyis cd but "he" told me it was incompatible |

I think I might have a copy of one that Mark Davis had running. There was also a ssh client called FISH, too. I'll see if I can find it and post a copy. |
