ok, so i installed this system with 1 disk in. dka0:

i've added a 40gb disk. allocated it, initialised it, and can write to it.

first thing i did was mounted it as disk$disk1:

created some directories on it via :-

create /dir disk$disk1:[central]
set default disk$disk1:[central]
create /dir [.software]
create /dir [.data]

etc

then i unmounted it.

k. so what i want to do is create some "logical names for these directories"

ie.
disk$software: maps to dka100:[central.software]
disk$data: maps to dka100:[central.data]

i can mount....
$ mount dka100:[central.data] volumename disk$data:

but when i try to mount the software one, it says
%mount-I-oprqst, device is already mounted

please forgive me. i'm probably asking an obvious question. its been 18 years since i worked with vms.

i know i'm doing it wrong.
anybody know the tool/command i should be using ?

i have been/am trawling through the hp documentation online, but to be fair, its a mess. takes longer to search for whats needed than time required to ask.

oh! i haven't yet booted the system since init'ing the disk. is there an OS file of some sort i need to add any mount commands into to mount it on boot up ? or is login.com the place to do it ?

regards

new. but old. memory isn't what it used to be.

The commands ("logicals") you are looking for are:

Define/system/exec/trans=conc disk$software dka100:[central.software.]
define/system/exec/trans=conc disk$data dka100:[central.data.]

Please note the trailing "." at the end of the directory specifications; this creates what are known as "rooted logicals". You can now treat disk$software and disk$data as "virtual disks", which (I think) was your intention. disk$software:[000000] maps to dka100:[central.software], for example, while disk$software:[samba] maps to dka100:[central.software.samba]

You'll want to pick a different logical name for your disk upon mounting, something like:

mount/system/noassist dka100 disk1

Then you can replace "dka100" in the above DEFINE statements with "disk1"

The DEFINE commands should be located in SYS$STARTUP:SYLOGICALS.COM. The MOUNT command should be placed before the DEFINE commands, so that the define commands can take advantage of the volume logical created by MOUNT.

Others will probably want to chip in here, as well...

cool....

k. so what i eventually did (thanks for the pointers brad) was :-

mount/system/noassist/bind=disk1 dka100:,dka200:,dka300:/dka400: disk1-1,disk1-2,disk1-3,disk1-4

define/system/exec/trans=conc disk$software disk$disk1:[software.]
etc for the rest of the logical maps i wanted.

and stuffed that into the relevant place in sylogicals.com

works a treat.

samba next smiley

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
