k. so what i want to do is create some "logical names for these directories"
ie.
disk$software: maps to dka100:[central.software]
disk$data: maps to dka100:[central.data]
i can mount....
$ mount dka100:[central.data] volumename disk$data:
but when i try to mount the software one, it says
%mount-I-oprqst, device is already mounted
please forgive me. i'm probably asking an obvious question. its been 18 years since i worked with vms.
i know i'm doing it wrong.
anybody know the tool/command i should be using ?
i have been/am trawling through the hp documentation online, but to be fair, its a mess. takes longer to search for whats needed than time required to ask.
oh! i haven't yet booted the system since init'ing the disk. is there an OS file of some sort i need to add any mount commands into to mount it on boot up ? or is login.com the place to do it ?
regards

new. but old. memory isn't what it used to be.

Re: disk allocation, mounting directories on drives as names
Please note the trailing "." at the end of the directory specifications; this creates what are known as "rooted logicals". You can now treat disk$software and disk$data as "virtual disks", which (I think) was your intention. disk$software:[000000] maps to dka100:[central.software], for example, while disk$software:[samba] maps to dka100:[central.software.samba]
You'll want to pick a different logical name for your disk upon mounting, something like:
mount/system/noassist dka100 disk1
Then you can replace "dka100" in the above DEFINE statements with "disk1"

The DEFINE commands should be located in SYS$STARTUP:SYLOGICALS.COM. The MOUNT command should be placed before the DEFINE commands, so that the define commands can take advantage of the volume logical created by MOUNT.
Others will probably want to chip in here, as well...
