I had been ignoring a warning message about one of the ALPHA server 4100's 3 power supplies failing for a long time.
The machine had been running all day with no problems as I'd been trying to connect the WEB BROWSER - CSWB - via my UBUNTU pc to the www then this morning I woke to the characteristic smell of cooked electronics.
PSU2 had 'burned out' but fortunately the new domestic circuit board which I had fitted a few months ago with its MCBs and residual current devices, worked well and cut the power even before any fuses 'blew' (different countries have different systems, I believe).
So - it might sensible to take action if you get PSU warnings.
THe machine seems to be ok though!
I might try going to an emulator option as a means of staying in touch with VMS - to preserve the Alphas and keep my electric bill down (I'm so relieved that our government stuffed full of lawyers and similar technical expertise have seen the danger in burning coal and are going down the far safer nuclear route )
