I am attempting to set up an alpha 255 I purchased off ebay to run openVMS 7.3 Hobbyist software. I need to update the firmware to do this. I have found the software on the net to be downloaded however i can only download to a PC. How can I transfer this file to the Alpha to do the update. |

Are you able to burn a CD of the firmware update? This is typically how it's done. |

I had the same "update problem" with my old PWS600. The firmware CD does not contains files for it and I suppose it does not contains files for alphastation 255 (because they are very old - there is a note about that - /ARCHIVE/FWREADME.TXT). So you can create a bootable floppy or do a network boot if you have already installed OpenVMS or Tru64. If you do not have these OS installed you can make a fat floppy:
ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/archive/astn255.html#method_1
You have to switch to ARC console, update the firmware, and then back to SRM (to install the OpenVMS). I did so for my PWS.
Where can be found older "firmware CDs"? I have found only version 7 (v7_0_cd.iso). |
