Dear Hobbyists,
I recently acquired a VaxStation 3100/30 with VMS 5.5 installed (no valid PAKs). So my questions are:
1. Is ist possible to run OpenVMS 7.2 on a VS 3100/30? Would the performance be acceptible? I think the box has 16 MB RAM and the original 100 MB HDD. I also have plenty of 1 GB SCSI HDDs so that I could replace the system disk. But RAM upgrade is no option I am afraid.
2. Are PAKs from the Hobbyist Program also valid for older versions like VMS 5.5 so that I could try to update the installed system?
What do you think?
Best regards
Bert
P.S.: Please forgive me my bad English |

Thank you very much Stephen,
actually I already have been a member of DECUS for 5 years. I've installed VMS hobbyist licenses on several Alpha's, but this is my first VAX

Yes; VAX/VMS V5.2 and later and all OpenVMS releases all use the same PAK checksum scheme within {LMF}.
Well that's fine. Then I'll stick to the installed version and try to reactivate the products using PAKs from the Hobbyist program. TCP/IP is not an option for VMS 5.5, I assume?
As wonderful and as elegant as VAX and Alpha might be, Integrity servers and Itanium processors are where OpenVMS lives now.
I know - but I am particularly interested in conserving old systems, just out of historical interest. Should I come across an affordable Itanium system one day, I might check it out. My company is running several Integrity Blades, but they won't let me install VMS there - HP/UX - what a waste
Best regards

OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 was a more common choice than V5.5, as that version still has prior version support (PVS) available.
A closer look revealed that it's actually VMS 5.5-2
Thank you very much for your help - and sorry that I started this thread within "Alpha Software Forums" - I think "VAX Licensing" should have been the correct category.
Best regards
