Hi There
We are plannin to scrap our Alpha server running vms 4.0. We would like to erase the data inside the HDD.
How to format the disks or erase the data before going to scrap.

I think you may have got the VMS version wrong. There was not a 4.0 release for alpha.
It depends on how securely you need to delete the data.
$ INIT/ERASE
will write one pass of zeros.
$ ANAL/MEDIA/EXERCISE=FULL
will perform three writes (zero, one, random).
These can be sufficient and have been available on VMS for a while.
Some specific disk subsystems have erasure software or ways to reformat the drives.
For some security levels then sandblasting the disk platters and melting them down in a furnace is required.
