Hi!
I just installed OpenVMS 7.3-1 on an AlphaStation 255. Without DecWindows, everything works fine, but when I install DecWindows, the system crashes during the boot process:
after several messages at the Operator Console the screen turns black and nothing happens. Ctrl+F2 shows the Operator Console, but a login is impossible - neither at the Console nor via serial terminal connection nor via Telnet.
When I remove DecWindows, everything works fine again.
As you may have noticed, I'm new to VMS.
I would highly appreciate any comments
Best regards

Dear Bert,
I suspect there are many possible causes for this, but one I have seen before is license related. If the Openvms and dw licences are not loaded properly, decwindows doesn't always load or function correctly.
You could also try uninstalling and re-installing.
Good Luck

Check that you have a DWMOTIF licence and that your system parameters are set according to the requirements for motif. Instructions as to how are in the doc for motif |

I suspect that the graphic card might be the problem. I am using a Matrox Mystique PCI card.
As I can't get hold on a Digital card, could you help me on how to configure DECWindows to run in standard VGA mode?
Is there a list of compartible graphic controllers for DECWindows?
Thank you very much!
