Hello,

I would like to install OpenVMS 8.3 from original Hobbyist CD on an AlphaServer DS10 with QL1410. Target disk is a 36,4 GB Compaq SCA drive connected to QL1410. At beginning of installation phase following message appears:

The following products will be installed to destinations:
CPQ AXPVMS CDSA V2.2-271 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS DECNET_OSI V8.3 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS DWMOTIF V1.6 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS DWMOTIF_SUPPORT V8.3 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS OPENVMS V8.3 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS TCPIP V5.6-9 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
DEC AXPVMS VMS V8.3 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
HP AXPVMS AVAIL_MAN_BASE V8.3 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
HP AXPVMS KERBEROS V3.0-103 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
HP AXPVMS SSL V1.3-281 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]
HP AXPVMS TDC_RT V2.2-107 DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.]

Portion done: 0%

%PCSI-E-CLOSEOUT, error closing DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.][SYS$KEYMAP.DECW.SYSTEM]FINNISH_LK201LF_DP.DECW$KEYMAP;1 as output
-SYSTEM-F-DATACHECK, write check error
-SYSTEM-W-NOTINTBLSZ, block size is greater than 2048
%PCSI-E-OPFAILED, operation failed
Terminating is strongly recommended. Do you want to terminate? [YES]

Problem is solved now:

- Install Linux on an other harddisk
- overwrite first 100 MByte of OpenVMS target disk with dd id=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1024k count=100
- reboot and boot from OpenVMS CD
- install OpenVMS and hove fun :-)

best regards
Christian

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
