OK, I got CIFS 1.2 installed and mostly working. It allows access from outside machines with proper credentials, and can connect to shares on other machines, but only when run by SYSTEM. Obviously, this is not quite what I'd like.
By process of elimination, since I could find nothing in the admin manual, it appears that SAMBA$SMBCLIENT.EXE must run with SYSPRV, SYSLCK, and IMPERSONATE. I thought maybe I could install it as a privileged image, but no, that isn't accepted either. ("/TRACEBACK image cannot be installed as privileged...")
Do I have to give these privileges to every VMS user who needs to use SMBCLIENT? Or is there another way to fix this?
