Hi, I'm very new and so please go easy on me here.

I recently got my membership number and went to register licenses.

I plan to run VMS under SIMH using Linux as a host. I think I get all the OpenVMS OS media from this site -- they send it on CD.

Anyway, the first thing it asks for when registering licenses is 'CPU type', and I get a long drop-down menu of various Alpha CPUs. What do I select here?

Do I need to wait until I start installing OpenVMS before registering the licenses?

Thanks for any help!

A drop-down menu of Alpha CPUs indicates you picked the wrong type of license in the first step of registering for hobbyist licenses.

SIMH emulates a MicroVAX 3900, so you need to select 'VAX Base License' in the first step (and go through the form again for 'OpenVMS Layered Products').

Registering licenses is done during an OpenVMS installation, or afterwards. As hobbyist licenses come in an email wrapped in DCL commands, it's best done after VMS installation (just copy'n'paste the DCL command at the DCL prompt).

HTH,
Martin

Oops..I ordered the Alpha hobbyist kit. Guess I'll have to change my plans as far as the VM goes.

So anyways, what about that alpha drop down?

if you are using linux as the host then you could use

http://www.stromasys.com/downloads/alpha-virtualization/charon-axp-nce/

to emulate a alphaserver system

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
