Hello everyone. I am brand new to OpenVMS, so please bear with me. First of all, I would just like to say that I'm really excited to get this going... I've been wanting to play with and learn OpenVMS for quite awhile and finally found an AlphaServer 1000A for cheap. Gotta love Craigslist! Anyway, onto my question...
Alright, I got as far as installing OpenVMS and figured out the first license issue (the checksum not matching). Everything went through okay it looks like and I'm at the DECWindows login screen. When I try to log in using "SYSTEM" for the user name and the password I chose, I get the following error:
[code:105510a02e]LMF license check has failed.[/code:105510a02e]
I tried googling this error and didn't come up with much. After reading through some of the OpenVMS FAQ (vmsfaq.pdf) from HP in hopes of finding out what was wrong, I came away somewhat frustrated. So, here I am asking you fine folks if you might have any suggestions.
Thanks!

Congrats on getting OpenVMS running! You're almost there, and fortunately, the fix is simple. The License error you are getting is because you are missing the DW-MOTIF license, which allows the windowed environment.
To get this license, go register for licenses like you did before, but select the "Layered Products" license. You'll get a whole list of licenses, one will be the DW-MOTIF license. Load it, and you should be able to log in a SYSTEM as you tried before. |

Welcome Ken,
And indeed well done for getting so far.
I once had a similar problem when doing a clean install. The system didn't like the DW-Motif license that I had entered manually.
Then you end up in the catch 22 situation where you can't login on the console - because there is a problem with the Motif license - to correct the problem with the motif license!!
I got round this by putting a terminal into one of the serial ports and logging in that way. I'm sure there are many other workrounds to this problem. But hopefully, you've already got round it and all is going well.
Kind Regards,
Russell |

I ran into the same problem and it works fine that way. |

[quote:b5ef908a3c="Stephen Hoffman"]On OpenVMS I64, the core licenses are OPENVMS-I64-FOE, [u:b5ef908a3c]OPENVMS-I64-FOE[/u:b5ef908a3c] or OPENVMS-I64-MCOE.[/quote:b5ef908a3c]

Yeah. That's it...
Of course the three options are FOE, EOE, and MCOE. |
