Has anyone visited this web site:
http://www.emulatorsinternational.com/en/personalalpha.htm
The above is supposed to be an emulator that runs on your PC. It builds a couple of virtual Alpha disks on your hard drive (default size of 1GB each).
It would appear that if I had a VMS install disk and a VMS license, that I could then run Alpha VMS on my PC, through this emulator.
Also, how does one get COBOL and FMS? |

COBOL and FMS - which versions? There have been links posted elsewhere in these forums to places where kits can be found. |

Thanks for the pointers.
When downloading from www.vmsone.com, can it be done downloading using Internet Explorer, then putting the downloaded files on CD-ROM for running on the Alpha? Or, is it better to just buy the CD's from www.vmsone.com?
I seem to be having file format problems. I downloaded COBOL and put it on a CD, but PRODUCT doesn't see it as a valid file. I even copied the files from CD to hard drive and renamed them .pcsi.
Is there another way to burn a CD so it is more VMS friendly? |

you need to persuade the web browser you are using to download the files as binary.
There may be something that can be done with mime types to add
application/octet-stream pcsi |

Thanks, imiller.
Looking in Microsoft Internet Explorer, I'm not seeing that as an option. I wish there was a way to just directly copy the files from www.vmsone.com into a working directory right inside the Open VMS operating system running on my PC.
I thought there was a way to buy the CD from www.vmsone.com, but now I can not find that. |

A similar problem seems to be when I will install OpenVms in my personal Alpha environment. The original VMS 7.2-2 CD can't be read as a bootable CD. Are there special drivers needed for reading a VMS CD on my PC?
Here is what scsicheck says about the CD drives:
Service Controller Bus Id Name LUN (device number) Device path Description CHARON setting
cdrom 1 0 0 HL-DT-STDVDRRW GSA-4166B 0 \\.\CdRom0 SCSI cdrom drive Emulator device
cdrom 1 0 1 HL-DT-STRW/DVD GCC-4480B 0 \\.\CdRom1 SCSI cdrom drive Emulator device |

dated (V7.3-1 alpha, V7.3 VAX) but would get you started for USD 30 |

If I recongnize the name, he's already got one. Appearently there is something with the configuration of the emulator where it's not accessing the raw device correctly. Thanks, though! |

Try to set your CDROM device as \\.\D: (or whatever the drive letter is.), I have an OpenVMS 7.1 original DIGITAL CD that boots fine with that configuration. |
