Dear All
First of all: thanks for keeping the VMS hobby community alive and active. This kind of participation and loyalty is not easily seen for other systems.

My problem: I installed 8.3 Alpha on the Personal Alpha. I also installed the PAKs for the base system, TCPIP etc. I upgraded to 8.4 last night. I am assuming my licenses will be valid on the new 8.4 system. I never tried to Telnet from OSX to the older 8.3 installation before.

The licenses seem to be ok. What license am I missing?

$ sh lic/usage

But when I try to connect from MAC OSX using Telnet (note FTP works ok):

You need to load the OpenVMS base licence - in this case 'OPENVMS-ALPHA'. Once you have loaded this licence you may need to modify it so that it is associated with the local system (because base licences often have the NO_SHARE tag).

$ LICENSE MODIFY OPENVMS-ALPHA /INCLUDE=node

Where 'node' is the nodename of your local system.
I can't remember if this step is needed for standalone systems, but it is required for cluster environments. If you have multiple 'OPENVMS-ALPHA' licences registered then you will need to add the /AUTHORIZATION=xxx-xxx-xx qualifier to the above command to distinguish which licence is to be modified.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
