Hi:
I port old DEC alpha OSF-1, 4.0 into freeAXP, and boot successfully.
The OS default setting is Japanese. I try to use Exceed 8.0 to connect.
It seems fonts problem. Login screen can not display on Exceed window.
Exceed 8 is very old,
1. Is there any X-client S/W on Window-7/8 provide multilingual,
so I can connect to DEC-X-window.
Or.
2. Please advise how to switch xdm to English version.
Thanks. |

The multi-lingual in X-11 is on the OSF-1 side, not the windows side.
I do not know how to change OSF-1 to be English.
I use Xming on Windows for the server because the current Cygwin/X reports a syntax error when I try to get it to use an external font server. |

Hi malmberg:
Thanks for your reply.
I'm not so sure, but as I know, X-11 is different with VNC.
Font should exist in both client/server sites.
"multi-lingual" means X-client can decode japanese character, and display right font in X-window. |

Hi
Finally, I find the English xdm-config file then switch to English version.
Use Exceed connect to activate dxsession well.
But now here is the problem.
When I set then network as host-only, use VmWare or VirtualBox network device.
Why Exceed can not connect to? Use Broadcast, dec alpha server is there.
But no any response after select.

X-11 either requires the font to exist on the display side, or you need to have a font server that the display program can reference.
You should be able to set up a font server on OSF/1. It may not be started by default.
Then configure your Exceed program to reference it.
For my home use, I used xming for an xserver and then set it to use my VMS system as the font server. Cygwin/X for the last few versions have reported a syntax error for all attempts to set a font server.
Can you ping both ways between your emulated server and the windows host?

It could be Microsoft problem.
I test same environment in Vista, everything OK.
but fail in win8.
ping each other are all OK.
But using ftp to get file, some problem under win8, no matter network device is provided by VMWare or Virtualbox.

OK. I summary the test I've done. Share with you.
NB1: Asus X59S, Vista OS.
NB2: Acer R7-571, Win8.
Emulator: FreeAXP, 2.4.3.533
Exceed 8.0
DEC Alpha OS: OSF-1, 4.0D, genvmunix
VmWare workstation 9. and Oracle 4.2.18(vista), 4.3.4(win8)
NB2: Acer R7-571, Win8.
case-1. Use virtual network device.
Use network device provided by both VmWare or VirtualBox.
Exceed cannot connect to Dec alpha.
Ping OK. Exceed Broadcast, Dec alpha is in the list.
But no any response, after select, until time-out window appear.
case-2. Use physical network device.
Acer R7-571 use usb network dongle.
Exceed can connect rapidly. But works unstably.
Will disconnect after login about 30-60 sec.
Then login screen appears.
NB1: Asus X59S, Vista OS
case-1. Use virtual network devices, provided by both VmWare/VBox.
Situation is same as NB2-case 2.
case-2. Use Physical network device.
2.1 Set display as multi-windows.
It will be same as NB2-case2.
Will disconnect quickly.
2.2 Set display as single-window.
Work stably. at least test over 30 min.
Conclusion:
1. Maybe Exceed 8 is too old.
But it worked fine in my previous NB, WinXP.
2. Experts in the forum advise comment please, tks. |

On the virtual NICs, try assigning the Avanti NIC the same MAC address as the Vmware or VirtualBox NIC. |

I check exceed log, in XConfig->Other Server Settings -> Troubleshooting.
The error log is:
:
Connection read error at XXX
:
where XXX is a number. Different number in each time.
I google the solution. Only one answer:
It is bandwidth of network is too slow.
I check my network device in alpha, only 10 M bps.
Would you please advise how to change to 100M? |

The 10 or 100 is not the 'real' NIC speed.. Its all 'virtual', so Avanti/FreeAXP's NIC(s) run(s) at the speed of the host/Windows NIC(s).
Make sure the host's NIC is running at a 'fast' speed.
Check that other protocols to/from the X client machine run well - check for retries etc.
Check the networks stats within the FreeAXP guest (netstat and ifconfig -ia) to see that connections are not getting dropped, or tcp/ip/udp traffic is not having problems.
