I have been reading the 'books' as suggested by Bruce and have been attempting to get FTP working from Windows 7 to FreeAXP/OpenVMS.
I have added a NIC, type DE435 to pc11 in the FreeAXP configuration screen and I have used the TCP/IP Services configuration facility. In short, DHCP Client, FTP Client, SMTP and Telnet Client are all enabled but stopped. I started up TCP/IP Services as the last option of the facility.
I have assigned address 10.1.1.20 to we0. UCX Show Interfaces gives:
Interface IP_Addr Network mask Receive Send MTU
LO0 127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 0 0 4096
WE0 10.1.1.20 255.0.0.0 0 1 1500
Using Filezilla I tried to connect to: Host 10.1.1.20 User <username> Password ******* Port 9000
I received an 'Unable to connect to server' message. So I am at an impasse and don't know where to go next. Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
p.s. I don't know if this is relevant but entering 'show devices/full ew' gives the following - I don't know what 'device is a template only' signifies against EWA0:

Can you successfully ping 10.1.1.20 from the Filezilla system?
Are both FTP client and server services enabled under VMS?
Do not FTP to port 9000, just FTP to 10.1.1.20. If you are running a default FreeAXP configuration, port 9000 is the console port (OPA0). |

No, I get a 'destination unreachable' message which, I presume, means that 10.1.1.20 is 'unseen' by ping
Are both FTP client and server services enabled under VMS?
Yes, I chose "6 - Startup HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS" to start the services (I assume this starts both client and server) and ran "7 - Run tests" which, for Internet IVP, gave:
"%%% TCPIP IVP: started %%%
UDP/IP test started at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:53.03
UDP/IP test ended at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:53.61
UDP/IP transferred successfully in 0 seconds 4198400 bytes
TCP/IP test started at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:54.12
TCP/IP test ended at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:54.80
TCP/IP transferred successfully in 0 seconds 4198400 bytes
RAW_IP test started at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:55.32
RAW_IP test ended at 12-SEP-2013 10:25:55.41
RAW_IP transferred successfully in 0 seconds 251000 bytes
%%% TCPIP IVP: completed successfully %%%
IVP request completed.
Press <ENTER> key to continue ..."
Do not FTP to port 9000, just FTP to 10.1.1.20.
Yes, did this but, as ping failed, didn't expect to connect - which Filezilla didn't.
I have checked that 10.1.1.20 is not being used by any Windows application e.g. checked SQL Server Configuration facility and 10.1.1.20 is not shown amongst the FTP addresses.
I think I'm nearly there just not sure where to go next. |

Bruce: if, by referring to "on a system", you mean FreeAXP the answer is no. I have one NIC allocated on pc11 - DE435. pc12 and pc13 are 'empty'. |

Further to my last reply, I don''t know if this is relevant but when I do a 'show network' I get:
Product: DECNET Node: A12345 Address(es): 1.1
Product: TCP/IP Node: freeaxp.com Address(es): 10.1.1.20
When initially installing OpenVMS I, for want of anything better, used A12345 as the scsnode. When configuring TCPIP I was asked for a domain and, not necessarily understanding its significance, entered 'freeaxp.com'.
It may or may not be relevant. |

Does your host system have two NICs?
Bruce: I have an Intel Wireless Adapter (real) and a Realtek PCIe Controller (which I think is used for wired ethernet connections - I don't have a separate adapter card for this.)
In the FreeAXP NIC Interface configuration drop-down box only the Realtek is shown (along with a number of 'virtual' adapters e.g. Bluetooth, 3 Microsoft Wireless network connections etc) and the Realtek is the one I had chosen for the interface. |

Test if you can ping the Alpha system from another physical system. Also test if the Alpha can ping your gateway system.
It sounds like you are using a laptop. Windows and FreeAXP will likely be sharing the same NIC. See section 9.3 in the User Guide for how to deal with this.
If possible, I suggest disabling the Windows services on the Realtec NIC and letting Windows use the wireless NIC.

Yes, I'm using a laptop. Per Section 9.3 I installed openVPN and, in Windows device Manager, a 'TAP-Windows Adapter V9' has appeared.
The User Guide then says "Go to the virtual 'Avanti NIC' ... Choose 'Configure' ... "
I am using FreeAXP and there is no 'Configure' option in the pc-11 NIC page. Also the options shown in the Interface drop down box are the same as they were before - there is no TAP-Windows adapter shown.
If possible, I suggest disabling the Windows services on the Realtec NIC and letting Windows use the wireless NIC.
Looking at Windows Services I can't see anything which mentions then Realtek adapter. |

Did you re-install FreeAXP after installing the TAP adapter? FreeAXP will not see new network devices without re-installation. |

No, I wasn't aware that I had to and the User Guide didn't mention it either - at least if it did I didn't see it.
I presume I don't have to re-install OpenVMS after re-installing FreeAXP? |

No need to re-install OpenVMS. Your virtual disks will not be affected by the re-installation of FreeAXP.
Thanks for the feedback on the documentation. We will add the following text to the User Guide under the NIC configuration section:
Note: If a host NIC is added or changed after Avanti has been installed, it will not show up on the configuration utility pull down list. Re-install Avanti to allow it to re-scan available network devices and add the new device to the list. |

OK, there is now a new choice in the NIC dropdown box: 'Local Area Connection (TAP-Windows Adapter V9)' which I have selected on pc-11. As I stated before there is no 'Configure' option on FreeAXP so no way to select 'Always connected' or 'Bridge connections'.
I did try to ftp again but got a 'Connection failure' message (I expected this.).
Am I supposed to configure a second NIC (say pc-12)?
Thanks for the feedback on the documentation.
Glad to be of assistance |

No need for a second NIC at pc-12. Now it should be a matter of correctly configuring VMS. Can you ping the IP address assigned to VMS (10.1.1.20)? |

Couple of things:
1- Reinstalling FreeAxp or Avanti is not needed. Rebooting Windows, or stopping and restarting the MSIPCAP service is enough (step 6 in the list in section 9.3). (Reinstalling FreeAXP reinstalls the service, which causes it to restart).
2- Always connected and Bridge connections are done from the Windows control panel - adapter settings window, not from the configuration utility. Without doing this, it will not work. |

This is what I did:
Settings->Control Panel->Device Manager: set TAP-Window Adapter V9 to 'Always Connected'.
There is no way in Device manager to select more than one adapter at a time.
Settings->Network Connections: able to select TAP-Window V9 Adapter and Intel Wireless Adapter. Set to 'Bridged Connections'. This seemed to install a new adapter 'Network Bridge - MAC Bridge Miniport' which has been given the name of my wireless internet connection.
Fired up FreeAXP/VMS, and Ipswitch WS-FTP. Tried to connect to 10.1.1.20 and received a 'Connect failure'. |

Ok, so now it's time to see what the network settings on the windows side are. Can you do a ipconfig /all from a command window on Windows? As the VMS machine is set to 10.1.1.20/255.0.0.0, the Windows machine should be set to 10.x.x.x/255.0.0.0 (where x.x.x is not 1.1.20) on the Network Bridge adapter. |

Well it seems that Windows IP address is 10.1.1.5 but the Subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0 :

So I guess I need to change the configuration in OpenVMS to 255.255.255.0 - would that be correct? |
