Hi All,
I have attempted to get FreeAXP working on VMware and I am unable to get networking to work from OpenVMS. What is the secret ?
Personal Alpha DS20 works fine.
I have tried everything in the FreeAXP manual. Using a dedicated NIC for AXP, setting the FreeAXP mac address to be the same as the VMware NIC, trying two different VMware NICs ( E1000 and VMX NET3 ),
tried the OpenVPN TAP virtual adapter and bridged the VMware NIC to the FrreAXP NIC. None of those actions helped.
Scanning the FreeAXP posts here it seems like some have got this to
work.
Can anyone offer some advice on this ?
The VMware instance is running WIN 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit.
Thanks in advance. |

Make sure the VMware NIC is in promiscuous mode.
Are Windows and FreeAXP sharing the same NIC? |

Hi Bruce, Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have a dedicated NIC for FreeAXP with all protocols
disabled.
I had read in the manual that promiscuous mode is needed for DECnet
but it appears that it is also needed for TCPIP.
I enabled promiscuous mode for the VMware switch and TCPIP then worked fine.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Are you running Tru64 or VMS? |

Thanks. I have seen the need to enable promiscuous mode under Tru64 when using VMware, even just using TCP/IP. You definitely need promiscuous mode for DECnet.
What VMware NIC type did you choose? We have had good results using the E1000 or VMXNET3. |

Hi Bruce,
Tried both types of ESX NIC initially ( E1000 and VMXNET3 ) and neither allowed TCPIP connectivity from VMS TCPIP Services until I enabled promiscuous mode in VMware.
All works fine now. Thanks. |
