Author "Getting Started" help for SIMH for VAX/VMS

Hello,

This is kind of a broad/open-ended question: But does anyone have some "getting started" help for usage of the SIMH simulator (to be used for VAX/VMS)?

I can provide any other details as necessary, but generally speaking would like to get this going.

We downloaded simhv38-1-exe-ether.zip for VAX and now we have all of the .c source and a vmb.exe

So now that we downloaded it, now what? I get an error running VMB, is there some other way to set it up? We could compile the source into something usable, but with what? Those kinds of questions.

The Help - FAQ link appears to be broken on their web site.

Thanks!

The link on the {Help with SIMH} webpage to a text version of the SIMH FAQ indeed is broken. AFAIK, the text version isn't maintained any more; you can download a PDF version via the {Simulator Documentation page}.

An older, but still quite accurate description of setting up SIMH and installing VMS is at {Phil Wherry's site} (also referenced on the "Help on SIMH" page), although it describes Linux.

VMB.EXE is the VAX-11/780 bootloader. The program you should be running is VAX.EXE. But before that, install WinPcap (a prerequisite, as described on the SIMH home page), and create a VAX.INI.

HTH,
Martin

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
