I need some help trying to set up my Personal Alpha and getting it to respond to FTP.
I am running Windows 7, and running PA version 2.0.17.
What I want to do, is be able to connect to the server from the Windows system it is being hosted by. Basically it is on my laptop, so I can take the Alpha with me and work with it to learn more about VMS. When I configure the network on the VMS system, i can do SHOW LOG *TCP* and my address shows up no problem. However i can never ping, ftp, telnet to the server. Any thoughts?
Sounds like you need a second NIC assigned to the emulator. If only one NIC is available, see section 9.2 in the Avanti User Guide to learn now to use OpenVPN to create a virtual second NIC.

Get PersonalAlphaPlus, (its free). I had issues last night and the night before with Personal Alpha crashing/killing Windows 7 when trying to bring up the TCPIP Services with exclusive mode selected. Replaced with PersonalAlphaPlus and all my issues ceased.

This solutions works fine - you set up the second (TAP Windows V9) NIC dedicated to the Emulator (as per the instructions in Section 9 of the abovementioned guide), configure it to be always on (see the guide instructions for how to do this), wait for it to identify itself and then select both NICs (the host and the TAP virtual one) right click, and select "Bridge connections".
However beware doing this on a Host VM - I am currently trying to make this work where the emulator is running inside a VMWare VM: bridging the NICs is causing loss of the connection to the VM. But it seems to work perfectly (so far) if the host is a hardware computer.
