Hi everyone -

My rx2600 is really looking for something more interesting to run than Windows Server 2008. Has there been any update on HP allowing the hobbyist program to distribute OpenVMS *media* for Integrity systems? I know we can get the licenses without much difficulty at all, but tracking down a media kit without shelling out hundreds of dollars to HP has been difficult.

Is it just a matter of the right person at HP needing to hear about it? If so, who can we ask? (If I were HP, I guess I understand why they might not be forthcoming about handing over media that supports shipping hardware, but Linux is free and Microsoft practically gives their stuff away to people who subscribe to TechNet or MSDN.)

If it's not going to happen any time soon, I'd like to see if I can "borrow" someone's media kit for an install. Unfortunately, I don't work in a VMS environment anymore, so if anyone in New York would be willing to help me out, I'd appreciate it.

There's a message on http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/license_software_programs/index.html that indicates that integrity media for the hobbyist program is coming soon. I don't recall having seen this. Is it new?

I would be nice to have access to the integrity kit. I don't have a job that can provide me with those but I have two servers waiting for integrity kits smiley

I wonder how HP defines the word 'shortly'?

I'm beginning to think that Integrity software won't be seen before itanium bites the dust. I'll check back here in 6 months...

More than 6 months has gone by, and I'm still looking at that message that "integrity media will be available shortly." If I'm not mistaken, HP has now promised to deliver media, and has not fulfilled its promise. That sounds like a violation of HP's Standards of Business Conduct. So, I sent email to [email protected] noting this violation, but I haven't heard squat from them.

Complaining to HP won't help. The Hobbyist program, while sanctioned by HP, is not run by them. It's a volunteer effort and non-profit, at that. Unfortunately this means waiting for things to happen when time permits. HobbyistOne is the main guy behind the effort and apparently he's been occupied by real world activities of late.

So is it safe to conclude that HP isn't particularly interested in attracting new end users and developers, you're trying to say? Because then I've been under the false impression that the hobbyist program was to stimulate OpenVMS, thus HP. If so, in that case, I then hereby stand corrected.

Anyway, with a fresh new year, it'd be a nice start of 2011 if the hobbyist program got one or more boosts.

Oh, my. I had a good chortle over that. Not at you, but at the notion. Putting it bluntly, neither HP, nor Compaq before them have had much interest in attracting new VMS users and HP, particularly, seems to be trying very hard to push current users off to other OS platforms as much as possible.

The sad thing is, you're not the only person who sees it like that...

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
