I ordered media kit at http://www.montagar.com/hobbyist/mount.html , hopefully they deliver soon. License Keys were already available.
I would like to build a certification authority based on OpenVMS, let's see where are the traps & pitfalls... |

First try was a failure: SRM supports Tekram DC-390U2W, but OpenVMS complains "DKA0 OFFLINE: ROM checksum read error". According to "http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1260556785560+28353475&threadId=1184845" it is an annoying "feature" of the driver. May be a Qlogic QLA1400 may do a better job. I will report here, if there are more news to my project. |

SRM has no problems with my hardware (old S3 video card, SYS53C895 and LX164) board. Linux boots flawless, that means hw is generally functional.
OpenVMS show while booting from CD following:
---cut here---
OpenVMS (TM) Alpha Operating System, Version V8.3
c Copyright 1976-2006 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
%PKA0, Copyright (c) 1998 IntraServer Technology Inc. PKW C2.1.22
%PKA0, SCSI Chip is SYM53C895, Operating mode is LVD Ultra2 SCSI
%PKA0, OFFLINE. ROM Checksum read error.
---cut here---
According to HP this means OpenVMS supports this chip, but driver is not willing to run on other controllers than IntraServer products. CD-ROM drive is from an old SUN, which support 512 Byte blocks. Mainboard is a modified LX164 533 MHz board with SRM V5.8-1.
Next week I will get a QLA1400 which may work better.

With Qlogic QLA1400: success, got OpenVMS installed :-)
OpenVMS seems also picky about Ethernet NIC. None of my archived NICs does working:
* 3C905B
* Syskonnect SK9845
* Several Intel NICs
* RTL8139
* Davicom 9104
I will try it again with a HP NC7771.

VMS tends to be qualified with certain hardware and is quite picky, insisting on a higher level of standards conformance than other platforms. |

Success :-) DEGPA-SA made my day. No more interface up/down, ok- it took one of my optical ports, but it is ok to get OpenVMS running. Now it is time to learn OpenVMS. So my hardware is finally:
* PC164LX mainboard (SRM)
* Diamond Stealth (very old S3 PCI card)
* QLogic QLA-1400
* DEGPA-SA
and many thanks to ebay for that great hardware repository and of course that forum.
