Hi.
I'm very interested in joining the Hobbyist program and getting started with OpenVMS, but I'm still a wee-bit wet behind the ears and, thus, confused.
This site says, as step 1, to 'join a group' -- what does that mean? What group or groups?
I guess buying the media is the only option, and that's fine by me.. but I was presented with a webpage to do so via Paypal but I sure didn't want to if it would take my $$ and then reject me because I'm not part of some 'group'.
What sort of 'group' is this that this site speaks of? This isn't like the 'group' way way back in high school -- the cool table in the lunch room -- where I wasn't ever allowed to join, is it?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all! |

Hi,
you have to be regsitered in a Decus Chapter, eg. http://www.connect-community.org/ . Becoming a member in such group you get a member number. This number is the way get your licenses to run your own OVMS box. See the "News Categories" http://www.openvmshobbyist.org/news.php?readmore=14
welcome..

Thankfully this is not high school or we would all be in some trouble.
You don't have to be a member of any group to order the media. You do need to be a member of a recognized VMS user group in order to receive OpenVMS license PAKs. The easiest group to join is Connect at: http://www.connect-community.org . The free guest membership at Connect should be enough for you to qualify for the Hobbyist licenses. It does take a week or two from the time that you sign up until the information has been transferred to the Hobbyist database so please be patient. Also Connect has been going through some organizational and website changes the last month so things might be running a bit behind -- though I have it on good authority that updates should start back up in the next week.
Once the information is transferred from Connect to the Hobbyist website then you simply click on the Register Licenses link to get your license to run OpenVMS.

We're glad to have you with us, Jesica and Airdorn. Let us know if we can help out with advice on hobbyist systems. Some of us have been at this (OpenVMS) longer than we'd care to admit! |

registering on DECUServe also works.
To register for DECUServe just Telnet to decuserve.org, use username REGISTRATION, and follow the bouncing ball... |
