Hello
My presentation:
I worked with VAX VMS up to version 5.5-2 the previous millennium.
Now days I have an “Alpha Server 800 5/333. Model: PB80A-B9” with OpenVMS 8.3. I now and then energizes it to amaze myself how much I remember, and how much things changed when you had to start using TCP/IP instead of DECnet.
Does anybody know how to get more memory for such a computer? As an amateur, of course, my economy is limited. 256 MByte is not much when I try to use Apache, MySQL, Samba and more at the same time.

Hello, and congratulations!
Now for the "bad" news - so far, I've only found one on-line reference to available memory; approximately USD$850 for 512 Mb. I've looked at crucial.com, and they don't have any memory available for your machine. Try Kingston, or one of the other major memory dealers.
If that search comes up empty, you'll be best off dealing with resellers who are VMS-aware, but the prices will not be good for a hobbyist.
P.S. - try one of the other web servers, like WASD.
The system uses EDO 3.3v DIMMS and are commonly found in
Compaq Proliant 1600's. The AS800 max capacity is 2G with 8
256Mb dimms. These EDO dimms can be found on eBay. I paid
about $10US for 1G.

You might also want to check http://www.islandco.com or mail them at [email protected]. Dave Turner of islandco.com also frequents comp.os.vms. I've found him very helpful in the past.
If islandco can supply it, you get tested memory with at least a year's warranty. This carries a premium in price, but you might want what the extra $$ buy.
