I finally decided to come out of the shadows and at least introduce
myself. I've lurked in many of the newgroups, reading or searching for
answers.
I've been a VMS user since 1984, starting with MicroVMS something on a MicroVAX I. Progressed to VAX 750 and 785 and then for a very brief time left for the wonderful world of PC's. Came back in when VAX 4000's were very popular and Alpha's were just coming into popularity. In all this time it took the experience with PC's to make me realize that VMS was engineered from the beginning and has evolved gracefully. As time has told VMS was engineered by people with I believe great foresight.
My work is in the Steel Industry where VMS is still very active as I now see HP Integrity systems deployed. Many of my customers still use VAXen and Alphaservers for every day mission critical applications, where failure is not an option.
Seem to have a habit of not being capable to allow VAX and Alpha systems to be scrapped via the dumpster so I bring them home to live out their "lives" with someone who admires their design. I have been posting photos on this site of some of the machines in my home.
I have so far rescued or bought: (in order of acquisition)
2 - MicroVAX 3800 (Process line data collection)
2 - DEC 3000-300 (Alpha) (Process line data collection)
2 - Alphastation 500 (333 & 400MHz) (CAD)
1 - Alphastation 200/166 (Process Line L2)
1 - Alphastation 250/266
1 - AlphaPC XL300
1 - Alphaserver 400/233
1 - Alpha PWS 600AU
2 - XP1000
1 - Alphaserver 800/500 (ran BARCO software, Avery Labels)
1 - Alphaserver 1000/233 (Warehousing software using Oracle)
1 - Alphaserver 1000A/400
1 - Alphaserver 1200 (Credit Union)
1 - Alphaserver DS20 (rescued from a BSD user put VMS on to heal)
2 - Alphaserver 4100/533/466 (ran ERP software)
2 - Alphaserver ES40/833/667 (from ORNL and Canadian Municipality)
3 - Vaxstation 4000VLC (Hospital)
1 - Vaxstation 3100-M76
1 - AlphaPC XL266
I think I need help...
I have no favorites, at some point every year I have one of them powered up for nostalgia reasons or to answer some burning question with VMS.. maybe the XP1000's and the 833MHz ES40. |

Welcome! I can help!!! Just send me the DS20 and ES40, in plain brown wrappers. No one need know, and you'll be relieved of the misery which your addiction entails.
Seriously, though, quite a nice collection! |

Wow, that's a pretty impressive collection! Do you have pics? I think it would be great to showcase some of that hardware in the Galleries! |

I've sent a few so far. Sent three this past week, have not seen them
in the Photo section yet..
I'll send more. I think I was inspired by Mr Vaxman in NJ with his
VAX Cave.. But really, I was not able to let any of them go to the
recyclers. |

I'm glad to hear OpenVMS on HP Integrity Servers are being deployed in the steel industry.
It's a fine collection. I guess you don't need any other form of heating. Power up the ES40 and enjoy :-) |
