I was looking at something interesting to learn and stumbled onto the site.
It was a bit strange because half my mates at work are old DEC boys. Most of the Tru64 stripe but a few know of the vax.
I have a shell account and I am tooling around in it. It seems the common commands are easier to use than linux or HPUX. I have not really found my purpose with the account yet. I like to write simple programs for BC. But have not found the OpenVMS BC command yet to play with.
I size computers for use with SAP. And its all math so it does not really matter what you do the math with.
Also I use the mail command.
I am guessing that mail is internal to the system or cluster because it will not send a test to my netscape account.

MAIL is generally local, but you can send/receive mail through the internet, if they have it set up to do that. It's useful for sending alert messages, but frankly, due to the amount and type of attachments that are often being used, a graphical mail client is better suited nowdays. You can still pull your mail off the VMS system via POP3, though.
