Hello everybody!
I'll try to shortly describe how I started with DEC HW and SW in next words...
When I was 14 years old my friend (older man whose job was building PeeCees) said me something about Alphas, but he had never seen real Alpha. It was like legend :-) At these times I was running Linux and the one best OS was only Unix for me.. But after two years I was a bit older and cleverer and I discovered OpenVMS. This was very important - I started looking for Alpha toys. I bought one Multia and when I couldn't install VMS on it I bought XL266 which doesn't have SRM at all It made me sad. But this winter I met man with the AlphaServer 800 and some other stuff for sale which I have to had. This is my first real Alpha and now I don't need SIMH to play with VMS...
I want to make main server from this Alpha and I'm trying to finalize it, but there are some problems (both hardware and software) which I can't solve at this time, so when everything will be done I'll write about it here!
You can see more info about my toy on this page:

That looks like useful AS800 you have. There are many things you can do with this system.
If you still have the multia then see the info in the VMS FAQ on running
VMS on this hardware. |

I know, it's great toy
I'm running there OSU, Kerberos, Samba, RDB, ... I'm looking for LDAP server, but the Enterprise Directory requires DECnet-Plus - I have PhaseIV. I don't know about any other directory servers for OpenVMS which are available for hobbyists. I think it's very important service for (not only) modern computer network.
I would like to make array from some relatively small (~9G) disks, but it seems that Samba has problem with $getdviwing volume-sets and SW RAID is not allowed to have using hobby licenses.
I have two Multias, but on one I've flashed OpenVMS starts booting and after first message with system version it returns control to SRM with some error messages included. Second Multia seems to be dead after some tests.
I've heard that XL's ARC can be rewritten by SRM from AS400 (AlphaStation, not AS/400 ), because it's the same hardware with smaller ROM.. but after several tries I resigned to hacking this...
I't would be fine to have cluster, but these NT-only boxes are slow and I've spent too much time with forcing them to run VMS without success. |

why not run DECnet/Plus instead of DECnet/IV ?
Applications work just the same and there are more things you can do? |

I know PhaseV is compatible with PhaseV, I should try it :-)
I was using IV on SIMH and my selection on Alpha was IV too, so it's time to learn something new. Thanks for recommendation.

people sometime stick with DECnet/IV due to lack of resources or sometimes just inertia.
DECnet/Plus (as DECnet phase V is now known) has lots of interesting features to play with and a command line syntax which was designed around a logical model (unlike NCP).
See

for some background. |
