Would there be any interest in a SIMH VAX kit? This would be a CD with SIMH, a loaded VAX/VMS system disk, some layered products pre-installed, for used on a Windows/XP system?
The idea is to get a nice installation kit where you click "Install", and after a little while, you have a SIMH VAX booted up, ready to receive your Hobbyist Licenses. No having to hunt binaries, convert CD's to ISO's - just everything packaged and ready to go (sans PAK's). |

sounds like a good idea to me as it would make it easier for people to play with VMS.

Given the growing popularity of the SIMH among Hobbyists, it would just make everything more convenient. |

I agree it would be a good idea. I run SIMH under Windows XP and it took some time to get the system built. |

Does SIMH under WinXP "just" get you to a console $-prompt in a command window (granted that's quite an accomplishment!), or has it progressed to the point where DECwindows / X11 Motif also works for the OpenVMS simulator ? (...perhaps with X-window clients sent to "DISPLAY 127.0.0.1:0" with an X-windows server like eXceed running alongside on the Windows machine ?).
My interest would definitely perk-up if/when X11 is feasible ...

You can also direct the console to a telnet port, and access it with something that offers a better VT emulation, e.g. PuTTY or KEAterm.

I have successfully set up SIMH to run with eXceed usng the TAP-Win32 driver of OpenVPN to connect to the XQB interface of SIMH (with XQA conected to XP's "real" ethernet interface).
DECwindows on a laptop display sure looks nice - gives you an Alphabook feeling

Hey Hobbyist one. Did you ever complete this project. Or did anyone else for that matter. I remember reading this thread a while ago and thinking this was a great idea.

This is a great idea as it would allow me to continue my VMS
activities while on the road and armed only with a WinXP laptop.
Count one vote please..

Tedious? A kit with everything pre-installed and ready to go? You guys take all the fun out of life.
Whatever you do, please do recommend people read the SIMH documentation because it's full of useful info that you probably have forgotten many years (decades) ago and might not otherwise ever remember if you just installed and ran with a pre-made kit that had everything done for you in advance. |
