I've just got started with openvms, so please bear with me.

I'm running a simh vax on Linux.

I downloaded all the software from the site and unzipped each one into a separate directory, then made an iso file of each kit (I assume that each zip file contains a kit). Then I associated basic.iso to dua2: on the simulator and mounted it. So I had this:

$ dir dua2:[000000]

Directory DUA2:[000000]

BASIC039.A;1 BASIC039.B;1 BASIC039.C;1 BASIC039.D;1
BASIC039.E;1 BASIC039.TXT;1

Total of 6 files.

I tried to install:

@vmsinstal basic039 dua2:

and got this: Beginning installation of BASIC V3.9 at 15:13

%VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product save set A ...
%BACKUP-F-NOTSAVESET, DUA2:[000000]BASIC039.A;1 is not a BACKUP save set
%VMSINSTAL-E-NOSAVESET, Save set A cannot be restored.

Digging through the archives I found I should do this:

$ copy dua2:[000000]*.* dua1:[basic]
$ SET FILE/ATTRIBUTES=(RFM:FIX,MRS:32256,LRL:32256,RAT:NONE) dua1:[basic]

Which I don't really understand yet (but I will) smiley

Trying another install:

$ @vmsinstal basic039 dua1:[basic]

Beginning installation of BASIC V3.9 at 15:21

%VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product save set A ...
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DUA1:[BASIC]BASIC039.A;1
-BACKUP-E-BLOCKCRC, software block CRC error
%BACKUP-E-INVBLKSIZE, invalid block size in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECTYP, invalid record type in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECTYP, invalid record type in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECSIZ, invalid record size in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECTYP, invalid record type in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECTYP, invalid record type in save set

%BACKUP-E-BLOCKLOST, block of DUA1:[BASIC]BASIC039.A;1 lost due to unrecoverable error
-BACKUP-E-BLOCKCRC, software block CRC error
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DUA1:[BASIC]BASIC039.A;1
-BACKUP-E-BLOCKCRC, software block CRC error
%BACKUP-E-INVBLKSIZE, invalid block size in save set
%BACKUP-E-FIDERROR, unexpected file change in VAX1$DUA0:[SYS0.SYSUPD.BASIC039]KITINSTAL.COM;2
%BACKUP-E-VBNMISSING, VAX1$DUA0:[SYS0.SYSUPD.BASIC039]KITINSTAL.COM;2 has missing blocks 17 through 53
%BACKUP-W-INCFILATR, incomplete file attribute data for VAX1$DUA0:[SYS0.SYSUPD.BASIC039]BASIC039_RELEASE_NOTES.PS;3
%BACKUP-E-VBNMISSING, VAX1$DUA0:[SYS0.SYSUPD.BASIC039]BASIC039_RELEASE_NOTES.PS;3 has missing blocks 1 through 16
%BACKUP-E-INVRECTYP, invalid record type in save set
%BACKUP-E-INVRECSIZ, invalid record size in save set
%BACKUP-I-SOFTRERRS, 65535 recoverable media errors occurred reading DUA1:[BASIC]BASIC039.A;1
%VMSINSTAL-E-NOSAVESET, Save set A cannot be restored.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

There is a file on the Freeware CD called "RESET_BACKUP_SAVESET_ATTRIBUTES.COM" that should be used to resolve this. Not all savesets use the record size of 32256 bytes. This procedure will look at the file itself and set the appropriate record size.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
