Hi!

I have a MicroVAX-II running VMS 5.5-2. I just fired it up for the first time in quite a number of years.

Unfortunately, I have forgotten the password to the SYSTEM account along with any other accounts I may have set up way back when.

I'm thinking that the easiest thing to do is just "scram" the machine and put the latest version of VMS on it. To do that, I need standalone backup and the VMS installer on TK50.

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff?

I've seen blank TK50's on eBay. I could buy a couple of those for trade out or fill up if anyone has the capability to make the tapes for me.

Thanks!

You can reset the system password with a conversational bootstrap.

Do a conversational bootstrap (B/1). When you get to the sysboot prompt, type 'SET/STARTUP OPA0:', and 'CONTINUE'. You should eventually be greeted with a dollar prompt. Type 'SET NOON'. Then set default to SYS$SYSTEM and run authorize. You can reset your SYSTEM account password. When you are done, exit authorize and type '@SYS$SYSTEM:STARTUP'.

When you are finished, shutdown the machine and do another conversational bootstrap. At the sysboot prompt type 'SET/STARTUP SYS$SYSTEM:STARTUP.COM' and 'CONTINUE'.

You know, that sounds vaguely familiar.

Thanks! I'll give it a try.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
