I downloaded the binary ALPHA084.ISO from the official hobbyist site which I was told could be burned into a CD

However the Windows 7 CD burner gives the error "The selected image isn't valid"

Same problem with 2 other layered products ISO files

Turns out ALPHA084.ISO could be a tar/zip and when I open it using 7-zip, I could see the following files:

ALPHA084.ISO
META-INF
MANIFEST.MF
cpq-axpvms-cdsa-v0204-320-1.SF
cpq-axpvms-cdsa-v0204-320-1.DSA

altogether about 8KB whereas ALPHA084.ISO is about 500MB

The manifest file contains the following

Manifest-Version: 2.0

Name: file:cpq-axpvms-cdsa-v0204-320-1.pcsi$compressed
SectionName: cpq-axpvms-cdsa-v0204-320-1
Digest-Algorithms: SHA-1
SHA-1-Digest: sBgsQwdw2cPT3ClHLYQAPKLfCO0=
CDSA_GUID: {6d913ccb-f5c1-11d7-81a7-08002bc48051}

I could not get Windows 7 CD burner 7-Zip or Power2go to create a disk image

So what do I do ?

Thanks for any help

You seem to have answered most of what you are asking.

If what you downloaded is a ZIP file, then it was mis-named to be an ISO.

Use UNZIP to extract the ISO file and then burn it as an image.

The file is not really an ISO file, it is a bootable disk image in ODS-2 format.

Try a free tool like www.imgburn.com or cd-record to burn the CD-ROM. If visiting the imgburn site, be aware that the real download links are in the version announcement, the big green download buttons appear to download an ADWARE loaded program that may also download imgburn.

Hello, That problem is solved - with the following steps

1. downloaded using https://ftp.usa.hp.com/hprc (for some reason ftp did not, in some cases it created what was apparently a complete file but when burned onto a CD it failed to boot)

2. ImgBurn to a CD from the above

My Alpha has been set up. Now for the updates and layered products ...

Thanks again for the ImgBurn suggestion

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

See the forum about licensing. Don't know if HPE hobby licenses still being issued. Commercial licenses still being sold.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
