i'm planning to use the alpha server as storage
although i'm only playing atm, the idea is to have it as a storage server to enable me to reduce the p4's i'm currently wasting as windows servers for my home network.
i will probably implement mysql just for fun, and maybe apache.
but what i really want to do is leave the system as a 10gb disk, and throw in 6*150gb disks.
so....
openvms with samba is the important thing.

p.s.
my missus gave me a choice.
use it or lose it.

Hi Dave,
I too am planning to have a go at Samba, to use the RAID5 disks on my Alpha to backup critical files from my PC IDE disks. Two IDE disks on my PC have died in the last 18 months and copying the critical stuff to DVD regularly doesn't fill me with joy. Why should I spend time and money on PC disks when I have gigabytes of unused, highly secure space on my Alpha.
Please let me know how you get on, it may save me and others here from hours of headscratching!
Many Thanks - Russell |

SAMBA V2.2.8 is available now for VMS. Watch out for the SAMBA V3 beta release for OpenVMS Alpha due next month. |

Thanks Ian for the info on Samba 2.2.8
Do you have a good link that points to it's location?
I have searched in vain to find the version that David had success with.
The ones I found complied without any errors and ran first time but wouldn't
authenticate any users onto my share, even though I created a privileged guest account
in VMS.
Sounds like starting again with a newer and thus more recently tested version would
be a good idea!
Many Thanks,
Russell |

Many Thanks
Unfortunately, the server appears to have been down for a few days now - which is why I've been searching around.
I'll just have to be a patient, hopefully it will be back soon.
Thanks again,

Thanks Ian,
Indeed it is back and has so far kept my little Alphaserver 800 busy
for three hours at 100% CPU recompiling everything.
Keep your fingers crossed for me when it's done.
Many Thanks,
