Hello.
I'm new user with OpenVMS and I have big problem.
One Alpha 1200A server died and there is no picture and the computer doe's not boot. The problem is something with the motherboard.
I have some program for finance and I need the data and the prgram to get extract from the drives. The drives are scsi Hotplugable. I have PC with Hotplugable backplay and I will install Linux but I need more information how to get data from OpenVMS drives and how to transfer if it is possible.
Thank you very much. |

I'll save you the trouble of wrestling with proprietary interfaces, obsolete RAID controllers, and other physical and electronic issues and skip to the obvious fact that Linux can't mount a VMS file system. I don't know why you seem to have that idea, as you are about to go to all the trouble of installing Linux for no reason. Windows, MacOS, and MS-DOS would get you just about as far, which is nowhere. Replace the motherboard, replace the system, or attach the disks to one of the "other" Alpha servers you alluded to. |

I think there is software for Linux that will read an ODS-2 structured disk. I'm not sure where to find it, but it's a possibility. In any case, obviously the software isn't any good without an Alpha. You could use 'dd' on Linux to copy the raw data from the drive, and you could even use COPY to a /FOREIGN mounted disk or large enough LD container on another Alpha to restore it. Inconvenient, but possible.

IIRC, it can cope with text and fixed-length record files only.

If you can install WindowXP on that PC, you could try installing Personal alpha (www.personalalpha.com), put in your drive, and let one of the disks refer to your apha disks. Since these are VMS files, you don't need to do anything else. eventually, you can even boot from your original disks. Ask on their forum if you need assistance.
The official, full product (Charon-AXP, VirtuialAlpha) can be sued if you cannot replace your motherbard. Check http://www.emulatorsinternational.com/en/index.htm for details. |
