Hello everyone,
This is my first ever install of openvms vax,
and I suspect that there is something that I have missed.
This similar to an earlier post in this forum,
from, "mark suhovecky" on the 2/Sep/2007.
Debian Linux is my operating system and I'm using the simh/vax emulator.
The installing goes well but hits a snag with the lisence/checksum.
The installer comes up with an error message:
%LICENSE-F-BADCHK, checksum does not validate for VAX-VMS
For the installing I have been following the instructions from "Phillip Wherry".
http://www.wherry.com/gadgets/retrocomputing/vax-simh.html.
Below are the details entered for the lisence/checksum:
Issuer: OPENVMS_HOBBYIST
Authorization: DECUS-DEC-40xxxx-xxxxxxx
Product Name: VAX-VMS
Producer: DEC
Units: 0
Release Date:
Version:
Termination Date: 5-MAR-2011
Availability:
Activity: A
Options: NO_SHARE
Token:
Hardware ID: NONE
Checksum: 2-AEPF-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Is that correct? [YES]:
Registering VAX-VMS license in SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]LMF$LICENSE.LDB...
%LICENSE-F-BADCHK, checksum does not validate for VAX-VMS
Please review all entered PAK data, including the checksum.
I am definately puzzeled and any assistance would be much appreciated.
Peter

Hi imiller (Administrator),
The checksum has a 2 at the front and then 4 groups of 4 capital letters. It is setup like: 2-ABCD-ABCD-ABCD-ABCD
1/ At install I have loaded the checksum number of times - no success.
2/ I rebooted and used @SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM - no success.
3/ I live in Australia and was unable to join Encompasse Australia, so I joined DECUServe in the US. I wondered if time zone was a problem. I entered a US location with, @SYS$MANAGER:UTC$TIME_SETUP.COM and reloaded the checksum - no success.
No success but thankyou for the comment,
Peter

Maria,
Can you post the transcript of your running VMSLICENSE.COM? That would help us see where things are going wrong. some of the inputs can be tricky for VMS newcomers.
VMX license PAKS are not encoded for any particular time zone or geographical area so that is not a problem. You can set your time zone back to the appropriate value.

I was not sure that it was appropriate to leave the full details posted, so I have blanked them.
Additionally a short time ago I requested a second set of hobbyist licenses. They arrived - their 'Termination Date' was the same, the 'Authorisation' & 'Checksum' were different.
But the same error occurred, "checksum would not validate"
I do have mild dyslexia if I don't concentrate, but I have been very careful in entering all the details,
Thanks for the assistance,
Peter

I think my above postings were a bit dumb as I am not sure what is ment by VMSLICENSE.COM .So I thought I'd have another go. The following is my current output from the simh emulator running the VAX.
Welcome to OpenVMS (TM) VAX Operating System, Version V7.3
Username: system
Password:
%LICENSE-I-NOLICENSE, no license is active for this software product
%LOGIN-S-LOGOPRCON, login allowed from OPA0:
Welcome to OpenVMS (TM) VAX Operating System, Version V7.3
[62"pst interactive login on Tuesday, 30-MAR-2010 20:32
$ SHOW LICENSE/FULL
Active licenses on node SPLVAX:
%SHOW-I-NOLICENSE, no licenses exist
$
Again cheers, Peter
As another note - sorry for the confusion but I'm a bloke. I use 'marla' as my login because its a small but pleasant town in the north of 'South Australia'.

PROBLEM SOLVED : )
I was being way too careful following the "Phillip Wherry" notes.
http://www.wherry.com/gadgets/retrocomputing/vax-simh.html
In loading the licenses he lists NONE against the Hardware-Id
Hardware-Id []: NONE
I found that if i leave this blank then the license will load.
Hardware-Id []:
Here is a list of the license information that was entered:
Issuer: OPENVMS_HOBBYIST
Authorization: DECUS-DEC-xxxxx-xxxxxx
Product Name: VAX-VMS
Producer: DEC
Units: 0
Release Date:
Version:
Termination Date: 5-MAR-2011
Availability:
Activity: A
Options: NO_SHARE
Token:
Hardware ID:
Checksum: 2-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Is that correct? [YES]:
Registering VAX-VMS license in SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]LMF$LICENSE.LDB...
Do you want to LOAD this license on this system? [YES]:
%LICENSE-I-LOADED, DEC VAX-VMS was successfully loaded with 0 units
Thankyou, imiller (Administrator) & reinhardtjh
Your responses were encouraging,
All much appreciated, Peter
