Can you mix a the Hobbyist kicences for Decnet, Pascal etc with a commercial base licence?
The expiring hobbyist licence seems a bit risky for old hardware. One day HP could just decide not to give out new ones or ignore OpenVMS.

HP contends that the license keys are not licenses.
HP does totally control the hobby licenses availability as they own the intellectual property.
If you want an authoritative answer, your best chance for a result is to e-mail the address that you received the hobby license pak for.
My take based on reading the licensing documents:
If the system has a valid commercial license and key then it can be used for commercial purposes.
If the system has hobby license keys on it, then it is assumed that it is operated under the hobby rules - no commercial use, even if it has commercial license keys on it.
Note that the AllianceOne license keys which allow commercial development and testing also have one year expiration.
And when I was at HP, all licenses for the internal development machines also had 1 year expiration dates. |

I was looking at buying a "refurbished" actual licence (certificate). I checked the HP licencing pdf, which lists this a one valid licence method.
Cheers,

Thanks guys. I just got my Hobbyist licence, and didnt realise there are over 100 PAKS in it. How many of these do you need to have a functioning networked computer?
Also, it seems like there is a ADA licence included?

Fully functional is a definition that you need to make.
There is an ADA license, but I do not know if it will work for the gnat product or if the open source version of it can be built independent of adacore.
For minimal network functionality;
Base OS license: VAX-VMS, OPENVMS-I64-FOE, OPENVMS-ALPHA depending on what platform you have.
For VAX/ALPHA you need: UCX for TCP/IP.
Alpha: DVNETEND for DECNET
VAX: DVNETEND or DVNETRTG for DECNET. DECNET is recommended even if you have a single VMS node because it allows special hacks.
For X-11 access or graphics console, you need DW-MOTIF.
Then add the compilers or other products.

Don't worry about it, a mysterious faction made sure that won't ever be a problem. |
