Well, after a long time of admiration for the VAX family, I'm finally ready to take the plunge and look into getting a VAX.
I plan to run OpenVMS on it and run it from remote X ( if a mVAX ) or local graphics ( if a VAXStation )
I'd like to spend no more than $300, and ideally get at least a VAXStation 4000 series or a mVAX 4xxx series machine, but I do know these are still in demand for some companies, so I may be unable to do this.
I'm willing to pay for shipping if its in the continental US, or if you're local to the Richmond area, or within an hour or two, I can meet you.
Thanks for looking. |

Go with SimH VAX for free and use DECwindows to handle graphics. |

As for what to look for see: http://sourceforge.net/p/vms-ports/wiki/VMSHardware/
The fastest way to get real VAX hardware running if you do not have a running VMS system is to set up a running VMS system using an emulator and have the real hardware do a network boot from it.
CD-ROMs are rare on VAXen. The companies that I worked at used Infoservers to supply the CD-ROM images to the network.
Option A: Set up an Infoserver on a real or emulated Alpha running VMS. (Real IA64 also works)
Option B: Set up SimH/VAX as a cluster boot node.
Finding affordable hardware is simply a bit of luck. You might also inquire on the comp.os.vms newsgroup. |

On comp.os.vms today by coincidence is someone in New Jersey that has a Vaxstation that they say they want to get rid of.
I do not have any other details about it.
