HI,
I want to start a small side project for fun.
I want to install a USB PCI Card and then connect an external hard drive.
I know I probably will have to write code. I found some books that can help me. I hope openvms 8.3 has that support for usb, since I know some alphas have usb ports. Not mine... hence the project...
Everyone here has 100 times more experience, so pointers, ideas, links or help are welcome !!!
Thanks,
Francisco |

Has anybody replied to this post?
I have a DEC 500au workstation and am interested in being able to add a USB PCI card to the system and hopefully have the USB support like some of the later models of the 500au. Are the USB ports on later 500au models built into the motherboard? Would the alpha see and add-on board?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If VMS recognizes the USB controller, it will load the OH driver.
Look for device OHA0: on your system.
I was able to use a Adaptec USB controller that I got from a local store and it just worked.
I also had one that I got from CompUSA that I had to enter into SYS$SYSTEM:SYS$USER_CONFIG.DAT as follows:
! CompUSA USB-2 Conteroller
device = "CompUSA USB-2"
name = OH
driver = SYS$OHCIDRIVER
adapter = PCI
id = 0x523710B9
end_device
I do not know how to tell before you try it if a specific USB controller will actually work with VMS.
It also may be hit or miss with the mass storage devices.

Just thought this might be helpful to someone:
I bought an Adaptec USB-2 4-port PCI card on eBay for $6.00. I plugged it into a 64-bit slot in my Alpha 500au and it did not like that. A message came up that said to remove the unknown device. So I decided to plug it into the harder to reach 32 bit slot and voila, it was recognized. I plugged two thumb drives into the card and was able to initialize and mount them.
The card was an Adaptec AUA-4000C
Thanks to the previous poster for the help.

I'm just getting started in the VMS world but I've also had success with a USB hard drive. Like (I assume) most of us I have a bunch of spare parts sitting around so I decided to put some of them to use:
An Orange Micro USB 2.0 card pulled from my dead G4 Mac.
A micro USB cable from some long dead and forgotten USB device.
A Molex to dual SATA power adapter from a PSU.
Best of all, a 120 GB OCZ SSD with native micro USB interface.
It took about 10 minutes to install all the parts in my DS10, initialize the drive and quadruple my storage space. Sure, choking an SSD on a USB interface seems a bit wasteful at first glance but at least now the parts are doing something useful and not sitting in the spares pile any more. |
