Hello, I'm new on this forum.

I've got an AlphaStation DS10 XP900 466 MHz Console V7.3-1, 128 MB RAM.

I'm trying to boot Debian GNU/Linux via bootp and the error is always the same with Debian 3.1, 5.0.10, OpenBSD, NetBSD, ... : "..bootstrap failure". I think it's a configuration option.

The bootp server is a Raspberry Pi using Reanimator (http://irix.mersisl.com/), a network appliance I have developped to install IRIX on sgi computers, but it should work for any bootp compatible computer.

The bootptab file contains:

ds10:\
hd=/srv/tftp/i:\
bf=tftpboot.img:\
ip=192.168.9.14:\
sm=255.255.255.0:\
sa=192.168.9.100:\
ha=DS10_MAC_ADDR:

I have tested using vm=rfc1048, ht=ether, bs=auto and the result is always the same:

boot ewa0
(boot ewa0.0.0.9.0 -flags A)

Trying BOOTP boot.

Broadcasting BOOTP Request...
Received BOOTP Packet File Name is: /srv/tftp/i/tftpboot.img
local inet address: 192.168.9.14
remote inet address: 192.168.9.100
TFTP Read File Name: /srv/tftp/itftpboot.img
netmask = 255.255.255.0
Server is on the sane subnet as client
..bootstrap failure

Retrying, type ^C to abort...

(boot ewa0.0.0.9.0 -flags A)

...

Some configuration values:

>>>show os_type
os_type UNIX
>>>show ewa0_protocols
ewa0_protocols BOOTP
>>>show ewa0_inet_init
ewa0_inet_init bootp

What I'm doing wrong? Do I need a firmware (SRM) update?

Thanks in advance.

edit: I use a switch to connect RBPi and DS10, but if I use a direct Ethernet cable, the result is the same.
edit2: I have tested the settings on http://www2.phys.canterbury.ac.nz/dept/docs/manuals/unix/DEC_5.0a_Docs/HTML/ARH9DBTE/TITLE.HTM (Example 5-1: Sample /etc/bootptab File) and vmunix is not loaded, same error.

It looks like your bootp image is not what the DS-10 is expecting. And I am sorry, I do not know what is needed to fix that.

I have not used bootp for Alphas, I use an infoserver (SimH Emulated on a RaspberyPI) for doing a boot of OpenVMS.

OpenVMS Hobbyist timebombed licenses are available from VMS Software Inc.

Thanks for your reply.

If have found this manual: http://www.vaxhaven.com/images/5/52/EK-DS10S-CR.D01.pdf

>>> boot -flags an -protocols bootp ewa ➌
(boot ewa0.0.0.4.1 -flags an)

Loading vmunix ...

The system is ready.
Tru64 UNIX Version V4.0E (sabl28.eng.pko.dec.com) console

I could try to boot hvmunix file via bootp, but I have no idea where to find it.

vmunix file is on the installation CD and doesn't boot using bootp, but I haven't found hvmunix.

Where is is file located?

Thanks in advance.

Problem solved: tftp path is /srv/tftp/i, so you must specify the boot file without the path, now it works this way:

ds10:\
bf=tftpboot.img:\
ip=192.168.9.14:\
sm=255.255.255.0:\
# optional
sa=192.168.9.100:\
ha=DS10_MAC_ADDR:

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
