I just bought some memory on ebay for my PWS 600au. I couldn't pass up a bid at the price. I got 20 sticks of Samsung 256MB PC100 RAM with ECC. Anyone who knows about the PWS 600au knows it only holds 6.

If anyone can use some memory, let me know and we can make a deal. Leave me a personal message here and I'll get back to you.

What is the maximum amount of memory that is possible in a Digital Personal Workstation 600au ? Does anyone know from experience that larger-capacity memory sticks are not supported ?

Checking the HP web site, I found this link:

http://h18002.www1.hp.com/info/GEBPW4/GEBPW4PF.PDF

... dating from June 1998 that cites the SN-MSP01-HF = 512Mb expansion as the largest (then) available for these machines. Since memory sticks must be installed in pairs, this 512Mb kit is two sticks of 256Mb each. Interesting that the above reference sheet says that Digital Unix supports a maximum of 1.5Gb of memory (all six slots populated with 256Mb sticks), but OVMS only supports up to 1Gb in this same machine, although that information may be outdated ?

Anyway, if one were to install banks of 2x512Mb sticks, or 2x1Gb sticks, would the SRM bios support larger memory capacity (assuming latest firmware version) or not ? And if supported by the BIOS firmware, what about at the OVMS operating system level ? My 600au dual-boots hobbyist OpenVMS 8.3, and CentOS Linux v4.3 for Alpha, so I'm tempted to try installing up to six larger capacity (1Gb) memory sticks unless users here know for a fact from experience that this will not work.

Thanks,

-- Jim

Hi,

I'm running 1.5GB with OpenVMS 8.3 on my 533au and haven't had any problems. I think I tried a couple of 512K sticks a while back and it would not recognize them. Might have been the sticks, though.

No more VAX hobbyist licenses. Community licenses for Alpha/IA64/X86_64 VMS Software Inc. Commercial VMS software licenses for VAX available from HPE.

Just re-visiting.. No more hobbyist licenses? Is that from vmssoftware.com, no 'community' licenses?

I recall that the disks failed on the public access VMS systems that included Fafner

Anyone know what happened to FAFNER.DYNDS.ORG? I had a hobbyist account here but can longer access the site.

At one time, didn't this web site have a job board? I would love to use my legacy skills one last time in my career.

New Hobbyist PAKs for VAX/VMS are no longer available according to reports. Only commercial licenses are reported to be for sale from HPE

Eisner, which is currently being moved, got an SSH update and the keys were updated to more modern encryption standards.
